Field Trips and Tours

Issbd 2012 offers opportunities for group tours of the lovely city of Edmonton and surrounding areas, local no-cost field trips, and individualized tours that can be arranged by delegates.

        Monday 9 July

Nick Holt

Run in the River Valley with Nick Holt

Nick Holt - ISSBD 2012 Local Organizing Committee Member and Professor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta - will lead you on a 6 km, 45 minute run at an easy pace through the beautiful North Saskatchewan River Valley. The terrain is flat, other than stairs leading into and back up from the River Valley. Meet directly in front of the Shaw Conference Centre (9797 Jasper Avenue) at 7:00am sharp, rain or shine.         Tuesday 10 July

Mike Dawson


Birding in the River Valley with Mike Dawson

Mike Dawson - birdwatcher extraordinaire and Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alberta - will lead you into the River Valley for a birding/walking tour. The terrain is flat, other than stairs leading into and back up from the Valley. Bring your own binoculars if possible. A very limited number of binoculars will be available for sharing.  Meet directly in front of the Shaw Conference Centre (9797 Jasper Avenue) at 7:00am sharp. The tour will return to the Shaw by 8:20am. In case of rain, the walk may be postponed to Wednesday 11 July (notification of postponement by email). To sign up, click here.

Cliff Higuchi, Vice-President and General Manager of the Shaw Conference Centre (SCC), enjoys showing delegates the natural beauty surrounding the SCC. He will lead you on a 6 km, 45 minute run at an easy pace through the beautiful North Saskatchewan River Valley. The terrain is flat, other than stairs leading into and back up from the River Valley. Individualized Tours

While visiting Edmonton for the ISSBD 2012 conference, be sure to explore Alberta's stunning landscape. A wide variety of pre and post conference tours can be arranged individually and customized to suit delegates' budgets and travel schedules. Delegates can arrange for these trips by booking through www.vacationscanada.travel or www.explorerockies.com.
 


Group Tours (Now Closed)

Anderson Vacations is pleased to offer the following four tours in the Edmonton area for ISSBD 2012 delegates and their families.

        Monday 9 July

Elk Island National Park Tour

Departs at 11:00am - approximately 5 hours. Travel to Elk Island National Park, a refuge to over 2,500 bison, moose, elk, deer, beaver and coyotes. National Geographic rated this park as the 8th best wildlife viewing area in the world.

Price per person: $102 +5% GST (Goods and Services Tax)

Includes: Transportation, guide throughout, National Park entry fee & boxed lunch.


        Tuesday 10 July

River Canoe Adventure

Departs at 11:00am - approximately 5 hours. Enjoy a guided, 3-5 hour boat trip down the North Saskatchewan River after being introduced to safe river canoeing techniques. The ancient pathway through Edmonton remains as it was hundreds of years ago, and is home to deer, beaver, geese and other wildlife.

Price per person: $127 +5% GST (Goods and Services Tax)

Includes: Motorcoach transportation (from the downtown core), canoes, life jackets, paddles, light refreshments, an experienced guide and a gourmet picnic lunch.

      Wednesday 11 July

Discover Fort Edmonton Park

Departs at 12:00 noon - approximately 3-4 hours. Spend a half day at the splendid Fort Edmonton Park, Canada's largest living history museum. You will go back in time more than 150 years and walk through the days of the fur trade, and the pioneer years of 1885, 1905 and 1920. Activities include a steam train, pony rides, penny arcade, carousel and Ferris wheel to name a few! Click here for a video of the park.

Price per person: $109 +5% GST (Goods and Services Tax)

Includes: Transportation, Fort Edmonton Park entrance fee, entrance to the Capitol Theatre, lunch, guided tour of Fort Edmonton Park, train and streetcar ride.

        Thursday 12 July

Edmonton in Bloom Tour

Departs at 12:00 noon - approximately 4 hours. Tour Edmonton's city in bloom, including the Muttart Conservatory, housing 4 majestic pyramids, each with a different display of flora and fauna. After the conservatory, continue on to the University of Alberta Botanic Garden to visit the breathtaking array of exotic orchids and free flying butterflies.

Price per person: $133 +5% GST (Goods and Services Tax)

Includes: Transportation, guide throughout, lunch, & entrance fees to Muttart Conservatory and Devonian Botanical Gardens.
